Extended Learning Project:  GENDER REPRESENTATION in Media

Your task, over the next half term, is to complete the following tasks related to gender representation.  The following tasks should be completed on your homework blog (blogger).

Task: 1

·         Read this (https://mattdent123.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/xw7ho9q.jpg) infographic, which explores the facts related to female video game characters. 

·         What do you think are the main reasons for this lack of equality in representation?

I think that the main reason as why women are not seen within the gaming community is due to the fact of that in the past women were not seen as equal and this is impacting modern day society, also it could be because of gaming being a more stereotypical recreational activity rather and players would rather have a male protagonist rather than female.

Task: 2

·         Read this (http://www.bustle.com/articles/143690-female-oscar-winners-are-more-likely-to-be-wives-than-anything-else-the-discovery-is) article, which discusses female Oscar-winners.

·         Summarise the key arguments made in this article into 5 bullet points.

1.      Women are valued by their body

2.      That Hollywood disrespect female actors

3.      Most popular role for women is being a wife

4.      Women are seen as unequal to men

5.      The expected jobs are not as ambitious

Task: 3

·         Define the phrase ‘patriarchal society’.

·         Do you think you live in a patriarchal society?

o   Support your answer with evidence.

A society in which males are dominant over women

I think I live in a slightly patriarchal society due to the wage cut but other than that I believe it is equal

Task: 4

·         Judith Butler (http://www.theory.org.uk/ctr-butl.htm) believes that we are not born into a gender and that gender is different to sex (male/female).   She say that we ‘learn’ how to be a particular gender through adopting characteristics that we ‘learn’ from society (the media included).

·         What evidence (from the media) could be used to support her opinion?

·         Find a specific text to use as an example.

I believe all the supporting reasons for this have been put into Judith’s article.

Task: 5

·         As the media industry plays such a significant role in shaping the dominant views of society (how people think), it also has a massive responsibility when it comes to the representation of men and women.

o   What could media producers do to create a society where they is more equality (in terms of gender representation)?

Men and Women should have equal roles within movies and not separated.
